Juneteenth is the newest federal U.S. holiday, a day to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S.  It’s a time when many families get together for a BBQ, while others might spend the day volunteering.

U.S. federal government offices are closed in observance of the holiday, as are many state and local governments and some businesses. Most banks will also be closed. And some retailers may close or have limited hours.

What is Juneteenth?

  • Officially called Juneteenth National Independence Day, it was signed into law by former President Joe Biden on June 17, 2021, according to NPR.
  • The word is contraction of June and Nineteenth, which is the day it is celebrated.
  • The federal holiday celebrates the day on June 19, 1865, that a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned that they were freed from slavery in the U.S., according to the National Park Service.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation, which forbade slavery in the U.S. and made all slaves free, was signed on Jan. 1, 1863, but slave owners in Texas did not attempt to free slaves until forced to do so by the military two years later.

With Juneteenth falling on a Friday this year, it gives Americans a three-day weekend. But what if you want to get some groceries or forgot to buy some essentials for the weekend?

If you have a local Kroger near you, you might be wondering, is Kroger open on Juneteenth?
